Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

It was somewhat more muted this time. Beth stumbled back. Clenching her fists open and close, she decided against curiosity. She turned and once more headed towards the green room that’s when she felt it.

Fingers closing around the curve of her shoulder, piercing through to the flesh beneath her shirt. She lifted her suitcase before her as a defensive weapon, fully intent upon knocking whomever it was away from her person.

FOUR

Except that there was nobody for the corners of the suitcase to knock back. No one had grasped her shoulder.

There was nobody at all, just an empty hallway.

Braced for an impact that wasn’t going to be taking place, her body stumbled back into the wall, shoulder jarring painfully against the frame of the painting. Beth’s breath was laboured, fear slowly creeping in through every pore of her body.

She couldn’t wrap her head around these occurrences and the way that her mind seemed to be playing tricks on her.

I am not crazy!

Her instinct to remove herself entirely from the situation was now even more urgent.

She needed to find her way back out of this house and to her car, which she assumed had been refuelled by this point. She had to flee to the safety of her flat and its absence of other people...

She blew her breath out evenly. That tempered sigh was her only build-up of the courage she needed to turn back to the door she’d originally been seeking. She continued counting backwards as she made her way. Her steps were much less hesitant as she traversed the space. She reached the end, after what seemed like an eternity.

Her fingers closed around the handle of the door and twisted; she was somewhat surprised that it turned under her direction and swung inward as she stepped into it. She entered the room beyond only to find it just as empty as the hallway she had come from.

White and green tablecloths lay over a cluster of circular tables, the tea sets atop them as fine as everything else that she had thus far encountered within the manor’s walls. It was pretty, but it was empty, and given that it was where she had been led to believe that Anne would be waiting…it was disappointing.

The door behind her closed softly, and
